Researchers from three U.S. universities, working together to evaluate omega-3 fatty acids’ effect on sudden cardiac death in dialysis patients, found that higher levels of omega-3  in  patients who were beginning dialysis was an indicator of a decreased risk of sudden cardiac death during the first year of treatment. Their results were based on an analysis of 100 patients who died of sudden cardiac death during the first year of treatment and 300 patients who survived.

Sudden cardiac death occurs in one out of four dialysis patients and usually happens within the first few months. Those patients with the highest levels of omega-3 fatty acids showed the greatest decreased risk of sudden cardiac death during the first months of treatment and in spite of other medical conditions they had.

Omega-3 fatty acids are most readily available in fish oil.
