A report titled Emergency Department Visits Involving Energy Drinks, which was issued by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), said that from 2005 to 2009, there has been a significant increase in the number of emergency departments visits because of energy drinks. In 2005, there were 1,128 visits, but in 2009, that number rose to 13,114.  The report  also noted that 77 percent of these visits were made by 18 to 39 year olds and 64 percent were made by males.

Research has shown that extremely high caffeine intake from energy drinks can cause arrhythmias, hypertension, dehydration as well as other medical conditions.

However, the problem isn’t just heavy energy drink usage. According to the SAMHSA report, 44 percent of the emergency department visits resulting from energy drink usage involved the combined use of an energy drink with alcohol, pharmaceuticals or illegal drugs. Fifty-two percent of cases involving 18 to 25 year olds were caused by this combination.

The report broke down this combination pattern. The following table shows the percentage of the total cases that presented with each of the three combinations. You will notice that men were twice as likely to mix energy drinks with alcohol and illegal substances. Women seem to prefer their energy drinks with pharmaceuticals.

Alcohol/ Drinks –  20 percent males – 10 percent females

Illegal Drugs/Drinks – 12 percent males – 5 percent females

Pharmaceuticals/Drinks – 23 percent males – 35 percent females
