Researchers from Florida State University College of Human Sciences have shown that a hypocaloric diet (low-calorie) may control the increase in arterial stiffness associated with menopause and obesity. The diet they used to demonstrate this was Nutrisystem.

Cardiovascular disease, which is brought on by obesity and high blood pressure, causes the arteries to become stiff. That means that the blood can’t flow properly, leading to heart attack and stroke. Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in postmenopausal women.

The study included 41 participants who were randomly assigned to either:

  • Low intensity resistance exercise therapy (four low intensity leg exercises consisting of  approximately 30 minutes each session)
  • A hypocaloric diet
  • A combination of both

Here’s what they found:

  • Diet impacts artery health
  • Adding low intensity resistance exercise to a hypocaloric diet can maintain lean body mass
