There have been some studies that suggest taking fish oil supplements that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids can prevent atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart beat that cause poor blood flow. However, a recent study suggests that once an individual has the condition, taking fish oil supplements has no effect on it.

The researchers studied 586 outpatient participants from a number of different treatment centers who had been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Four hundred twenty-eight of these patients required electric shock to restore normal heart rhythm. Fifty-five of the patients had at least two episodes of atrial fibrillation in the six months before the study began. One hundred-three patients needed electric shock and had at least two episodes in the prior six months. The patients were randomly selected to receive one gram daily of fish oil supplements or placebo for 12 months.

At the end of the trial period, the researchers found that there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of:

  • Prevention of recurring episodes of atrial fibrillation. Fifty-six of 297 participants  in the placebo group and 69 of 289 participants in the fish oil supplement group had a recurrent episode of atrial fibrillation.
  • All-cause mortality, nonfatal stroke, nonfatal acute heart attack, systemic blood clots, heart failure development, or severe bleeding.
