Want to Increase the Amount of Fruit and Vegetables Your Kids Eat? Have Dinner With Them.

Families that eat dinner together, even as few times as once or twice a week, have kids whose daily fruit and vegetable intake is almost at the recommended five servings daily, according to researchers at the University of Leeds.

The researchers conducted a study of 2,383 children with an average age of approximately eight years old who attend 52 primary schools in London. These students are part of two clinical trials to evaluate a school gardening program. The children’s diet was evaluated using the Child And Diet Evaluation Tool. This is a 24 hour checklist that covers all aspects of diet, with an emphasis  on fruit and vegetable consumption.

Here’s the results:

  • Children ate on average 293 grams of fruit and vegetables per day.
  • Using clusters by school to calculate the total amount of fruit and vegetable consumed, the researchers evaluated how the home affects children’s fruit and vegetable intake. Children who said they always ate a family meal together at the dinner table ate 125 grams more fruit and vegetables than families who never ate a meal together.
  • Parents’ daily fruit and vegetable consumption was associated with higher fruit and vegetable consumption in children compared with children whose parents rarely/never consumed fruit and vegetables.
  • Cutting up fruit and vegetables for children resulted in higher consumption.
  • Children who said their families always cut up their fruit and vegetables ate 44 grams more fruits and vegetables than children whose families never cut up their fruit and vegetables.
