Veggie and Cheese Snacks Can Satisfy Kids as Much as Potato Chips

As a parent, you worry about what your kids are eating between meals. However, if you are too restrictive about between-meal snacking, your kids will find a way to eat them anyway, and the snacks they pick will probably be the most unhealthy ones they can find.

So what’s a parent to do? The answer to that question was the basis for a study conducted by researchers at the Cornell Food and Brand Lab. They analyzed responses from 201 students in grades three to six who were asked to eat either a plate of potato chips, a plate of vegetables, a plate of cheese, or a plate of vegetables and cheese while watching afterschool cartoons. The researchers questioned the kids about their fullness at the beginning of the experiment, after watching one cartoon, and again after watching a second cartoon.

Here’s what the researchers found:

  • The kids who ate the vegetable and cheese snack plate needed much fewer calories than the children who ate the plate of potato chips to feel full.
  • Kids whose families spent less time eating meals together or talking with each other ate more potato chips than other children.
  • Children from families who didn’t eat together and overweight children showed the biggest reduction in the amount of calories consumed when eating the cheese and vegetable snack instead of potato chips.
  • Overweight and obese children ate 76 percent less calories when they ate the cheese and vegetable snack while other children showed a 60 percent reduction in calories eaten. Both groups said they were as full when eating the cheese and veggie snack as they were when eating potato chips.
