Vitamin D levels that are lower than normal may cause daytime sleepiness, either directly or by causing chronic pain, say researchers from Louisiana State University.

They studied 81 sleep clinic patients who reported experiencing problems sleeping and pain that was not specific to a particular area of the body. The participants Vitamin D levels were measured through blood samples and their level of sleepiness was evaluated through the Epworth Sleepiness Scale.

The researchers found that:

  • In participants without a Vitamin D deficiency, meaning levels that were greater than or equal to 20 nanograms of Vitamin D per milliliter of blood, the sleepier they were during the day, the lower their level of Vitamin D.
  • In participants with a Vitamin D deficiency, meaning levels that were less than 20 nanograms of Vitamin D per milliliter of blood, only the African-American participants showed an association between daytime sleepiness and low levels of Vitamin D. This was attributed to the fact that higher levels of skin pigmentation are a risk factor for low levels of Vitamin D.
