Researchers from the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science have created the iTube, which attaches to a cell phone to determine if there are allergens in a food sample. The iTube accomplishes this by using your cell phone’s camera and an accompanying smart-phone application.

The iTube can test for a number of allergens, including peanuts, almonds, eggs, gluten and hazelnuts. Here’s how it works. Food samples are ground up and mixed in a test tube with hot water and a liquid that extracts the allergens. The test tube contents must then be allowed to sit for several minutes. After this step, the mixture is combined with testing liquids according to a specific series of directions. The iTube then converts the images of the mixture through the cell phone camera into a measurement of the concentration level of allergens present in the mixture. You not only know if there are allergens in the food sample being tested, but also how much of an allergen is present.
