You’re always hearing fill up on fruits and vegetables and you won’t want to eat all those things you shouldn’t. Well, researchers from the Department of Nutrition Science at Purdue University say it isn’t so.

In a 21-week study, these nutrition scientists evaluated how including fruits and vegetables, in both solid and juice form, into the daily diet of 15 healthy lean participants and 19 overweight/obese participants would affect their responses to eating additional food after consuming the fruits and vegetables. All of these individuals were infrequent consumers of fruit and vegetables on a regular basis.

The primary outcomes they were looking for were:

  • How much of the meal served the participants consumed after eating fruits/vegetables
  • How long a time elapsed before the participants ate again
  • How many more calories the participants consumed after a 400 kcal fruit preload

Here’s what the researchers found:

  • Overweight/obese participants said they felt less hungry after consuming the fruit preload in juice form as compared with solid form
  • Participants consumed substantially less of the meal served after consuming the solid fruit preload
  • The time that elapsed before participants ate their next meal was not significantly different between the solid fruit and the juice preloads
  • Daily energy intake was substantially greater when the obese participants consumed the juice preload as compared with the solid fruit preload
  • Daily energy intake was higher when the lean participants consumed the juice preload as compared with the solid fruit preload
  • Hunger and fullness ratings were unchanged when participants consumed fruits and vegetables in solid or juice form for 8 weeks each
