Low levels of antioxidants in adults aged 60 years old and older were associated with clinical depression, according to a study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The researchers who conducted this study evaluated Block 1998 food frequency  questionnaires that were administered between 1999 and 2007 to 278 elderly participants, 144 with depression, 134 without depression, who were 60 years old or older.

Here’s what they found:

  • The amount of fruit and vegetable eaten, a significant factor in antioxidant intake, was lower in individuals with depression.
  • Vitamin C, lutein, and beta cryptoxanthin intakes were substantially lower among individuals with depression
  • Antioxidant intake resulting from the use of dietary supplements was not associated with depression, meaning the antioxidants must come from food in order to prevent depression
  • Low levels of antioxidants in individuals with depression may contribute to their elevated risk of cardiovascular disease
