Is Eating Fruit the Key to Heart Health?

Researchers at the University of Warwick and Unilever, a company that produces consumer goods, are teaming up to determine whether the nutrients in fruit and vegetables could help cardiovascular health and protect people from type-2 diabetes. The basis for the study is the belief that the nutrients in fruit and vegetables activate cell defence mechanisms in the walls of blood vessels that protect them from age=related damage, and also help to prevent type-2 diabetes.

The partners in this project have outlined a three-year program for their research:

  • The identification of fruit and vegetables that have the right nutrients to positively impact vascular health using screening technology developed by the University of Warwick
  • Using the findings to develop prototype products to be tested on human blood vessels
  • Clinical trials of the prototype products would be conducted using middle-aged, overweight volunteers. The study participants will have their blood vessel function and glucose levels monitored to identify which foods activate protective qualities
