Frito-Lay is extending its Cracker Jack product line with a new addition called “Cracker Jack’d” that contains a caffeinated variety called Power Bites. The secret ingredient in the Powers Bites’ recipe is caffeine in an amount equivalent to a cup of coffee. There has been no announcement of a date when the new souped up version of this childhood favorite will hit retail stores. However, Nationwide Candy is taking pre-orders to be shipped after December 22nd.The Center for Science in the Public Interest is already petitioning the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take action against what it is calling an illegal adding of caffeine to a product:

“The FDA considers caffeine safe for use in cola-type beverages up to 0.02 percent.  The lack of a standard for other products makes its use in those illegal, according to CSPI.  In a letter to the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, CSPI executive director Michael F. Jacobson alerted the agency to Cracker Jack’d, Kraft’s caffeinated “water enhancer” MiO Energy, and caffeinated “Extreme Sports Beans” marketed by the Jelly Belly Candy Company.”

While Frito Lay is insisting that the 70 mg of caffeine in each 2 oz. service is perfectly safe, and that the product is not intended for children, Cracker Jack’d is already on Facebook.
